Ben Hogan's Secret Part 1
Tracy Reed

I am asked all the time, "What was Hogan's secret? Was it his wrist? Was it kicking the right knee in? What was Hogan's secret? What made him so accurate?" That is what Hogan was. Hogan was powerful and he was accurate.

I tell them all the time that Hogan gave one hint to his secret in his book The Five Lessons. His simple hint was, "Golf should be played from the inside halves of the feet." What was he talking about? He was talking about balance.

Hogan's secret was that he used his body's auto-dynamic balance system to control his body movement. He used the feedback that he gets. How does that work?

Here is a very good way to do it. I tell people all the time to take a walk. When you take a walk, I want you to pinpoint exactly where the weight is on the bottom of the feet as you walk. When your heel hits, is it the middle of the heel? Is it the outside of the heel? Is it the inside of the heel?

When you roll across the foot, does it go to the ball of the foot, or does your weight move along the outside edge of the foot? Do you push off from the outside of the foot or the big toe or the middle of the foot? Both feet will be different.

Until you actually do this exercise, you won't get anything out of it. The first thing to do is to take a walk tonight and do this. Please don't take it for granted. You have to do it because you have to experience it. If you don't experience it, you can't use it and I'm giving you something you can use here.

Here is what will happen. As you walk, you will be able to identify exactly what your feet do. Your mind is going to bring up a picture that you will hold in your mind as you take each step. It is going to point out exactly where the weight is.

What are you doing here? You are getting in touch with your body's auto-balance feedback system. This is the same feedback system that Hogan used to control his swing. This is Hogan's secret.

What did Hogan do? Hogan took that information and turned it around. How do you turn it around? Talk another walk and this time correct the way you walk. Take that walk with the intention to land in the middle of your heel, go from the middle of your heel to the ball of the foot, and push off with the middle of the foot. Do this for both feet consistently and do this without looking at your feet; just look straight ahead. Just continue to walk that way.

It will be a little awkward at first, but the fact is that you can do it. The more you walk like that, the more it will become normal. You will also possibly notice that you may lose some of the aches and pains you have in your lower back and your hips because this will realign things for you.

The most important part is that in the first part of the walking exercise, you got in touch with your body's balance feedback. This is part of the communication system between your mind and your body.

The second part is that you were able to change how your body moved with the mere intention. You just wanted something to happen; you told your brain you wanted your body to do something and it did. This is how it works. This is the secret to controlling the golf shot.

How do you do this in the golf swing? You do the same thing. In the golf swing, just stay on your arches. When you take your backswing, make sure the weight does not get to the outside half of the back foot. What will that do? It will control your right side so you don't sway.

When you make your downswing, make sure your weight stays on the inside half of the left foot during the downswing. This will control the left side so you don't sway through.

You will see immediately that your contact will improve, your distance will improve, and your consistency will improve.

What was Hogan's secret? Hogan's secret was two-part, but for most golfers, this is the most important part. For an advanced golfer, we have a whole other section that Hogan tried to do.
