Ben Hogan's Secret Part 2
Tracy Reed
People ask me, "What was Hogan's secret?" The first thing I always tell them is that he used balance to control his swing.
There was another secret that Hogan had and if you execute it properly, it is amazing how well and how consistently and how long you can hit the ball.
This is for advanced golfers. If you are an average golfer, please don't try this because it will ruin your swing.
When Hogan came down through the downswing, he wanted to see the grip end of the club make it through impact before he struck the ball. He was actually trying to get the grip end of the club through impact with the club still parallel to the ground before that club head was released to go down to the ball.
When it was released at the last moment, it would not only come down in a lever form, but it would turn, as well. The combination of those two levers being released at the very last moment, the late hit, per se, such as Sergio does, provided Hogan with a lot of extra distance.
It also provides an uncanny accuracy. If you're in balance, which is the first part of his secret, and if you do this, there is the caveat. You have to use the large muscles of the body to make this happen. If you only do it with your arms, you will lose distance and you will probably hit the ball fat. This has to be done using a correct swing and that's why it has to be for advanced golfers. You turn back with your upper body, you turn through, the legs first, the upper body goes second, and the upper body drives the arms through and you only keep the handle moving down the line using a mental intention.
If you do this properly, you will be amazed.
A lot of people say, "Wait a minute, if I get the end of the handle through impact before the club strikes the ball, I'll miss the ball all together." Give it a try. You will be amazed. You cannot miss the ball if you get the handle going down the line towards the target and then get it out just ahead of the ball. You can't miss it. It's an amazing thing.
If you put yourself on video and you continue that club moving down the line towards the target through the shot and out of the shot, you will be surprised at what your swing looks like.
That's Part 2 of Hogan's Secret. It is very difficult to maintain. It is an intention; a visualization; you can't make it happen, but if your swing works properly, you can watch for it and see it happen, if you want it to... That's what makes this part of Hogan's secret so difficult.
There are 2 more parts to this series of articles, because WHAT Hogan did on the golf course isn't near as important as how he managed to consistently play his super accurate golf game.
